The first openly gay governor of a US state is officially running for office.
California state controller Betty Yee announced her bid for the Democratic nomination at the CalMatters Ideas Festival in Sacramento on Thursday, per the Los Angeles Times.
The first-time candidate, who served as state controller from 2011 to 2013, says she's running because inequality is so pervasive in the state and she wants to do what she can to fix it.
"I'm running for governor because I think it's time for women to be in power," she says.
"I'm running because I know how to get things done, and I know how to get things done without raising taxes or taking away people's rights."
If elected, Yee would be the state's first female governor and the first openly gay governor of the nation's most populous state.
She's joined in the Democratic race by state Sen.
Hannah-Beth Jackson, state Sen.
Scott Wiener, and current state Attorney General Rob Bonta.
