Joe Biden's administration is suing Virginia over a voter purge program it says violates federal law, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.
According to CNN, Virginia Gov.
Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order in August allowing local election officials to remove anyone on the rolls who indicated on a DMV form that they were noncitizens.
Those voters are given 14 days to affirm their citizenship or have their registration canceled.
The Justice Department says the order violates the National Voter Registration Act, which states that no "mass voter removal program" must be completed no later than 90 days before an election.
According to Kten, the Biden administration's lawsuit claims that local election officials have no discretion under the program to prevent the cancellation of voters who fail to return the notices even if officials have reason to believe that those voters are USA citizens.
Youngkin responded to the lawsuit by accusing the Biden administration of filing an unprecedented lawsuit less than 30 days out from the election.
"Virginiansand Americanswill see this for exactly what it is: a desperate attempt to attack the legitimacy of the elections in the Commonwealth, the very crucible of American Democracy," Youngkin said.
