A leaked list of the European Union's top priorities for the next decade paints a bleak picture for the bloc's efforts to combat climate change.
The list, prepared by the European Commission and leaked to Der Spiegel, shows that environmental protection, decarbonized economies, and migration are at the top of the list, with security at No.
2.
"This is a shocking departure from Europe's North Star policy centered on fighting the threat of climate change," says an analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, who calls the shift "a reframing of the political debate."
The leaked list "appears to confirm the expectation of a 'green backlash,' but is it an indication of a Europe tired of green and ready to backtrack on its climate commitments?" the analyst asks, noting that the EU's ambitious European Green Deal "is the only tool that could allow us to keep our nature, society, economy and indeed, humanity, not 'just' safe, but afloat."
