Six Honored for Community Service Efforts

When Betsy Reed Schultz learned that her son, Capt.

Joseph Schultz, had been killed in Afghanistan, she founded the Captain Joseph House Foundation to provide a break for Gold Star military families, the Peninsula Daily News reports.

"I could not have done this without all the people who've supported me and the Joseph House Foundation," Schultz said.

"I am honored to be a part of this."

Schultz, who lives in Port Angeles, Wash., was one of six people to receive plaques last night at the Clallam County Community Service Awards.

Among them: Don Zanon, who retired as director of Peninsula Behavioral Health in 2006; Steph Ellyas and Lyn Fiveash, who operate the Veterans Clothing Closet at the Clallam County Veterans Center; and Carol Labbe, who retired from the Sequim School District and directed her energies toward helping other children.

Taylor is a longtime volunteer with the Peninsula Trails Coalition, which supports and advocates for the major trail systems on the Olympic Peninsula.

He does everything from trail maintenance to organizing work parties to answering questions from the public online and via social media.
